Who this policy applies to

Wordle.gg is an independent, fan-made word game. It is not affiliated with The New York Times. You can reach us about anything in this policy, including a request to exercise your rights, through the contact page.

Game progress, kept on your device

Your guesses, statistics and streaks, your settings (dark theme, hard mode) and a cached copy of the word list are saved in your browser’s local storage. That data stays on your device, is not sent to us and is not linked to a name, email address or account. If you clear this site’s data or play in a private window, your streaks and statistics are erased and cannot be restored.

Ordinary web request data

When your browser loads a page or fetches the daily word, our hosting provider receives what every web request carries: your IP address, browser and operating system, the page requested, the referring page and the time. This is kept briefly in server logs to run the site and protect it from abuse, and is not used to build a profile of you. The site’s typeface is loaded from Google Fonts, so Google also receives your IP address when the font is requested.

Daily completion counter

When you finish a daily puzzle, your browser sends one anonymous request to a third-party counting service (abacus.jasoncameron.dev) that adds one to that day’s total, shown as the number of players who completed the puzzle. The request contains only the language and the date. No name, account or identifier is sent, although, as with any web request, the service can see your IP address.

Analytics

We use a privacy-friendly analytics service to count page views and understand which pages are used. It reports aggregate figures such as the page visited, referring site, browser type and country, and is not used to identify individual visitors.

Cookies

Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. Some are set by this site and some by our advertising and measurement partners. They remember your consent choices, measure how the site is used and, where you have agreed, make advertising more relevant to you. You can manage or delete cookies at any time in your browser settings. Blocking them does not remove advertising, but it makes the ads non-personalised and may break features that rely on storage.

Advertising

This site uses Ezoic to manage and display advertising. Ezoic and the advertising partners it works with may place cookies and similar technologies on your device and may process data such as your IP address, device and browser details and your interactions with ads. The companies involved are listed in Ezoic’s advertising partners list, which changes over time.

Where the law requires it, a consent prompt appears before personalised advertising is enabled, and your choice is passed to those partners. When a consent tool is available in your region, the button below reopens it so you can change your answer.

Why we are allowed to use your data

For visitors in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom: personalised advertising and non-essential cookies rely on your consent, which you give or refuse in the consent prompt and can withdraw at any time. Serving the site, keeping server logs and protecting against abuse rely on our legitimate interest in running a working, secure website. Game progress stored in your browser is not processed by us at all, because it never leaves your device.

California

We do not sell personal information for money. California law treats some advertising activity as a “sale” or “share” for cross-context behavioural advertising, and the advertising described above can fall into that definition. To opt out, use the privacy choices button above where it is shown, send a request through the contact page, or use the industry opt-out links above. Our consent tool also honours the Global Privacy Control signal if your browser sends one. You may also request to know, delete or correct personal information, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising those rights.

Children

Wordle.gg is a general-audience word game and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA). If you believe a child has provided personal information through this site, contact us and we will delete it.

How long data is kept

Server logs are kept only as long as needed to run and secure the site. Game progress in your browser is kept until you clear it. Cookies expire on their own schedules, which the companies that set them publish in their own policies.

Security and links

The site is served over an encrypted connection, and we hold no passwords or payment details of yours. Pages may link to sites we do not run, including the partner and opt-out pages above; their privacy practices are their own.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the revised version is posted here and the date at the top is updated. Questions, complaints and rights requests can be sent through the contact page.
